BC Hydro Week 1: First Week as a DevOps Co-op โ€“ Onboarding, SSH Keys, and Workflow Setup

๐Ÿ—“ Week 1: May 5 โ€“ May 11, 2025

So it's officially been one week since I started my DevOps co-op at BC Hydro. Figured I'd write down what happened before I forget everything.

The first few days were mostly onboarding stuff โ€” training videos, setting up VPN and remote access, getting my laptop configured. I also joined my first daily scrums (9:30โ€“10:00 AM every morning), which was a nice way to put faces to names and get a sense of what everyone's working on.

On the project side, I started looking into implementing secure authentication for the CI/CD pipelines. Still debugging some issues there. Also set up and tested an external API integration, which went smoother than I thought it would.

Honestly, the hardest part this week wasn't the technical work โ€” it was wrapping my head around how enterprise security and access control works here. Coming from smaller environments, there's just a lot more layers to everything. But I guess that's kind of the point of doing a co-op at a place like this: learning how things work at scale.

The team's been really welcoming so far. Looking forward to getting deeper into the CI/CD stuff next week and hopefully closing out the authentication changes.
